It is definitely easier to learn golf if you were younger of age. However, it’s not difficult to get hold of the golfing games even if you are an adult beginner. There are quite a few golfing tips for mid-aged persons who just started and trying to learn how to play golf.

I began my golfing games in my mid twenties. I started just playing nine holes occasionally; shooting in high 50s. I worked hard on my short game and slowly progressed to eighteen holes. Secondly, consider hitting the range hard so you may strengthen your golf muscles and senses. That will increase flexibility. Do not just hit ball after ball after ball. Aim at targets and improve your focus. As a general rule, do not hit any club more than 3 times in a row. Thirdly, when you golf, slow down and do not look up. Focus on the ball, see the ground after you hit the ball and eventually look at the ball.

Club fitting will help as well. As for choosing appropriate golfing clubs, it depends on your build, it is not an one size fit all scenerios. If you think you want to play first before the lessons, look in the newspaper and you can find some fine but inexpensive (about $100) golf-clubs.

The most important thing before you go out and spend too much money for new clubs is to try and figure out if you will really like the game. The game is very complex and not very easy to learn. The only way even as and adult learning the game, you have to know how to start from the beginning. Get a professional golf instructor will get you off on the right foot. With strokes and clubs and learning the game right.

If you take a few lessons from a teaching professional. That person will teach you the correct grip, stance, swing and so forth. My suggestion is that you don’t learn golfing from your friends. Your friend may be an excellent golfer but he or she has his or her own faults in game. It is important that you start off with the right foot.

It is important that you learn properly in the early stage of the game, because once you form some bad golfing habit, it’s difficult to unlearn. I’m so tired of reading about the latest and greatest method for a golf pitch shot or any other golf shot for that matter. You know, you can go back to some golf magazines from the 60′s and you’ll see almost the exact same pictures and instruction sequences as today. Not much has really changed in golf instruction I’m here to tell you. If you read the latest books, however, you’d swear that the human body was just invented or that golf clubs were just invented, one of the two.

Listen, it’s so simple to make a great golf pitch shot and everyone wayyy over complicates this. As with everything I teach in golf, it all boils down to doing a couple main things very correctly. Most of the details matter very little but we get all caught up in so many minor things that we end up not paying attention to the major thing.

For a golf pitch shot. Here’s the major things:

1. As still a body as you can given the distance of the swing. Again, I hear all of this advice on videos about wrist cock and proper stance and blah blah blah… Guess what? There’s many ways to make a pitch shot, not just one. But they all work more consistently when the body is still. Focus on this. Work on this in your living room while watching TV. You don’t even need a ball? This will pay you back in spades in lower score and yet nobody does it.

2. Hit down to make the ball go up. Now if I had a nickel for every time I saw an amateur try to “help” the ball up in the air, I’d be a millionaire. This is so common because it is counterintuitive. To hit a great golf pitch shot, you must strike the ball before the ground. If you need more loft, pull out your sand wedge or lob wedge. Don’t go through all those bodily gyrations to force it. The best way to make sure this happens is to pre-load it in your setup. That means, you should be leaning on your front foot more than your back. That drops your front shoulder down and back shoulder up. As long as you keep your body still, your swing will necessarily result in a downward, correct strike on the ball.

3. Make the shot while keeping it as low as possible. In other words, you don’t always need a wedge! In fact, for most amateurs, running the ball up on the green is almost always a better choice, especially if you tend to chunk it or hit it fat as they say. Pull out your 5-iron some day and chip with it anytime you don’t absolutely have to put it in the air You’ll be surprised.

Folks, those are the biggies. Get real good at them and then you don’t even have to worry about any details. Forget about being “technically correct.” Much of that stuff is for the pros. Look, you just want to break 100 or 90 right? How will you do that? By becoming as consistent as possible. Work on the big 3 in your next golf chip shot and you’ll be amazed at what you can do.

When we look at golf club design since 1990, we see the movement to a larger clubface. This has resulted in clubs that are significantly easier to hit, meaning more good golf shots, even for beginners. This is due to the creation of a larger “hitting area” or “sweet spot” on the clubface where the ball can be struck solidly for maximum distance. Beginning golfers absolutely must start their golfing careers with large head metal woods and oversize irons.

Club manufacturers have also added the element of “perimeter weighting” to the larger irons. Perimeter weighting is the term used for moving weight from the center of the club to the outer edges. All you need to remember is that the lie of the club makes a significant difference and you need to have it checked by the club fitter.

A putter isn’t normally included in a set of clubs. My tips on buying golf clubs for beginners would always include spending some extra time selecting a putter. Putting is a very individualistic part of the game, and the putter should look and feel right to the player. So much of putting is confidence, and you need to be very comfortable with your putter selection. A club fitting can also include the putter. Hybrid golf clubs are becoming ever more popular with amateurs and professionals alike. Designed to replace “long” irons, the hybrids make those difficult 3, 4, and 5 iron shots far easier. They look different than irons, they feel different so it is natural to ask the question how to use hybrid golf clubs.

First the question is what makes the hybrid different than an iron. Just looking at one you can tell that there is far more mass behind the face, it’s wider and most importantly, the center of gravity is much lower than an iron allowing an easier launch of the ball. Every year, major manufacturers come out with improvements in club stability and club face. This year Taylormade came out with a single hybrid that allows you to dial in the shape and distance of the shot. If this club proves viable, then it will be the only hybrid you need in your bag.

How well do hybrid golf clubs work?

Why is the hybrid so much better than a long iron. The short answer is versatility. They can be used to replace fairway metals and deliver much more predictable and accurate shots than a fairway club without giving up distance. They are far more effective out of the rough than an iron because of their mass and heel design which allows for smoother contact with the grass. You can even chip with these clubs using a putter stroke!

So how do you use a hybrid golf club?

That depends.

If you are using the club as a replacement for a fairway metal, you’re going to use the same sweeping type swing plane that you would use for a 3 wood. This will give you the same distance as a fairway metal but will give you greater accuracy because and forgiveness. Why? Because fairway metals have a slight curve in their face while the hybrid is flat. If you hit on the curve of a fairway metal you will end up with a slice or a hook. The flat face of the hybrid gives you a bigger “straight” hitting surface.

Understand, because you are using a sweeping swing plane the ball is likely to run after it lands.

If you’ve pulled out a hybrid instead of a 4 iron, and you’re looking for a long shot that will stick when you land, then address and strike the ball the same way you would if you had an iron in your hand rather than the hybrid. Basically this means striking down on the ball to get a high launch with backspin.

You can play with the hybrid and get a variety of distances and shot shapes out of the same club. Here’s an example:

At the course that I play regularly at, there is a par 3 that plays 160 to 185 yards. Understand I’m a senior golfer and 185 yards was too far for my 7 wood and too close for my 3 wood. Before I got my hybrids, I had to use a three quarter swing with my 3 wood and I usually wound up rolling off the green.

Now when the flag is at 185, I take out my hybrid equivalent of a 4 iron and play it like a 3 wood. I place the ball a little forward in the stance and use a sweeping swing. It lands in the center of the green and runs to the back.

When the pin is in the center, I place the ball in the middle of my stance and play it like an iron striking down on the ball. The result is a high shot that goes to the center (170 yards) and sticks. If the pin is in the front and I’m feeling lucky, I place the ball back in my stance and use the same swing as an iron striking down on the ball. This normally produces a really high shot that will fly past the flag and then spin back.

One club, three different shots. These hybrids can really improve your confidence which translates into better play your entire round.

Driving Down The Fairway (The Long Bit!)

First, you have to know that there are the woods. These are called the driver, the two wood, three wood, four wood, and the five wood. There is a six wood and seven wood but they are rare.

The number describes the angle of the face of the head, with driver being the most upright and the lower numbers angled more, to give loft to the ball when it is hit.

Woods are used for getting the golf ball the farthest distance possible and do so by the weight they have behind the head. It’s shape is bulky and weighty, so that when you swing you have all the meat of that weight built into the momentum of the swing, then POW – down the fairway you go!

If you want to hit the golf ball over two hundred yards off the tee then you may well use a wood. Incidentally and confusingly, they are nowadays made of metal!

Distance With Control

Second, you have to understand that there are the irons. These clubs are meant for greater accuracy and are most commonly, though not exclusively, used for short distance shots.

You see, you can use irons for distance too and especially with a tricky hole, or when the weather is a bit challenging, you will see pros using irons

There are several types of irons. These are numbered one to nine, with an increasing loft, which also reduces the distance possible. These standard iron golf clubs are essential in getting the golf ball as close as possible to the pin, using loft and flight as the main tools.

Special Golf Clubs

Third, there are the special golf clubs, most of which are very specific in nature.

The first of the special golf clubs that you have to understand is the wedge. The wedge is used to get the golf ball as high as possible. If you want to go over a tree, or if you want the ball to drop like a stone with little forward bounce, like on the green, then this may be the golf club of choice.

The second of the special golf clubs is the sand wedge. Do you see the sand bunkers all over the golf course? When you get stuck in these sand bunkers, you need to use the sand wedge to get out of them.

Due to the loft this club will, when used with the right technique, slice through the sand beneath the ball and lift it onto the grass.

The fourth of the special golf clubs is the pitching wedge. This pitching wedge is used so that you can get an accurate shot to the green. The pitching wedge is the second most accurate golf club in your golf bag.

The last of the special golf clubs is the putter. The putter is the most accurate of the golf clubs because this is what you use in order to get the golf ball into the hole. It’s a very specialized club that you use nowhere else on the course.

What Golf Clubs To Buy?

Now that you are familiar with all these types of golf club in your bag, you have to understand that aside from the types of golf clubs, there are also many, many brands out there. This is where your headaches really begin!

From used golf clubs to new ones, from clones to personalized fit clubs, you have the world of a choice to make. Whilst it’s true to say that your performance should only be about your swing and skill, most manufacturers will say that their clubs make the difference.

Putting new grips on your golf clubs can be a inexpensive and effective solution to quickly give you more consistency in your game.

Most amateur golfers never change the grips on their clubs. They play for years with a set of clubs without ever changing the grips!

Whereas, some professionals have been known to re-grip their clubs at the end of every competitive round. They do this so their clubs feel exactly the same. Chances are that they don’t need them re-gripping that often, but in today’s tour competitions there is so much money at stake that they do not want to leave anything to chance.

How often should you re-grip your clubs?

A good general rule is:

if you play once a week, then you should change the grips on your clubs once a year. Play twice a week, change twice a year etc.

Of course, if you do a lot of practice on the range you should consider changing your grips even more frequently. You could easily hit 30 shots with your driver in a range session. In a round of golf you may not use your driver more than 10 times. So one range session a week hitting 30 drives, would equate to 3 rounds a week, implying re-gripping 3 times a year.

You will also find you have certain clubs that are used far more often than others, especially if you only play your home course the majority of the time. This is because you play the course in a certain way – same clubs for same shots, mostly governed by the length of the course. So after some months the grips on certain clubs become more worn than others.

What happens when a grip is worn?

Grips are fundamentally just pieces of rubber to enable us to hold the golf club securely. The grips have various type of a textured surface to provide more grip security and feel. As a grip is used over and over the surface rubber begins to wear. The natural oils in our hands also start to affect the grips. You will notice this as it will start to look shiny.

If you look at old used set of golf clubs that have never been re-gripped you will see that the grips are often very shiny.

Shiny grips are a problem. You have to grip the club harder when the grip is shiny so that it does not slip and turn in your hands as you take a swing. You may not even be aware you are doing it! The problem with gripping the club too hard is that it adversely affects the way you strike the ball. Your hands are simply not relaxed, and therefore, because the muscles in your hands and forearms are tense, they will slow down. In the golf swing, relaxed hands are fast hands. You need fast hands to get good distance.

It is worth checking your golf clubs at least once a month. Compare grips across the entire set. If any are beginning to wear, consider getting them renewed.

New grips feel good. They can almost feel “sticky” by comparison to the old worn grips. This can give you real sense of confidence.
