The game of golf is not only physically but also mentally challenging. It is a strategic game that has many fans around the world. Golf is played by hitting a golf ball using golf clubs on an area called the teeing ground. Once the ball has been hit, it will travel along fairways and into the next prepared area, where a hole is found. This prepared area is known as the putting green.

Simply put, the target of the game is of course to put the ball into the hole in as few hits as possible. This means that a golfer has to complete the hole by hitting the golf ball from the teeing ground into the hole in the putting green using the golf club in as little strokes as possible. A round of golf usually means a play of 18 holes.

There are two basically two kinds of play in golf. In the match play, the winner is determined according to the number of holes lost and won. In the other kind of play, which is the stroke play, the winner is the golfer who uses the least number of strokes to complete a round.

In playing the game, there are two very fundamental rules to adhere to: Play the course as you find it; and play the ball as it is found.

Should the rules above be difficult for you to follow, keep in mind that you should at least play fair at all times. How do you determine what is fair and what is not? Read on and find out some rules which will give you a greater understanding on how to be a fair player in playing golf.

Basic Golf Courtesy

Do not stand, move or talk too close to a golfer who is about to make a stroke.

Play without any delay. Leave as soon as the other members in your group leave.

Try your best to play when everyone in your group is already out of the way.

Try to replace the divots as much as you can. And if you have walked into a bunker, don’t forget to smooth out all your footprints.

It is not advisable for you to drop your golf clubs on the putting green, so avoid it at all cost.

Rules to Playing Golf

Before you start on your round of golf, take some time to read the local rules which are stated on the scorecard that you hold. After reading the rules, it is a good idea for you to mark which golf ball you will be using, which will make it easier for you to identify it. Several golfers may be suing the same brand of golf balls as you, In this case, it would be easy to see which golf ball belongs to you.

Before you start, make sure you have counted your golf clubs. You are allowed a maximum of fourteen golf clubs.

When beginning the actual play, make sure you tee off in front of your tee markers. Should your tee off be a little bit off, or outside of the area specified, you may be asked to repeat your stroke. If this happens in a match play, then you are lucky as there will be no penalty for you. However, if this happens in a stroke play, then you are given a two-stroke penalty. That is why it is important for you to tee off in the specified area.

When you are playing, should your ball lie in a water hazard or a bunker, remember not to hit or touch the water or bunker in any way before you do your downswing.

The ball should never be spooned or pushed: it should always be struck fairly.

It is all right if you want to mark the ball that you are using. You could also clean your ball: just lift it, clean and put it back exactly where it was previously.

In the case of dropping a ball, the best way to do so would be to stand straight and to hold your golf ball at the length of your shoulder, and to drop it gently. Should you, in dropping the ball, happen to strike another player, the caddie or even yourself, you must drop the ball again. This is done with no penalty.

It would also be all right for you to pick up your ball if by doing so you would assist another player. On the other hand, you may also lift any other ball if that ball is interfering with your playing or another player.

By remembering the basic rules of golf as well as the basic common courtesies of playing golf fairly, you will make the game more enjoyable for you and others.

A relatively new golfer trying to concentrate not only on “how to play golf” but also correct swing mechanics, I have often wondered whether the golf clubs I use make a difference. There have been times that I felt that the club might help my swing or give me improved golf game results.

However, my initial logic based guess was “clubs probably do not make a difference”, at least for beginners because I believed that our golf swing inconsistencies don’t allow any technological improvement in a golf club to make a statistical or subjective difference. ‘It probably works for intermediate or expert golfers’ was my rationale.

To be honest, I have always been skeptical of big name branding on any products that have generic competition that might, in fact, be the same product with a different label. Generic drugs are a great example of how you can buy a product that works properly without all of the costs associated with brand marketing. Typically, it is the same product at the ingredient level.

I backed up my belief that “it makes no difference” which golf clubs you have in your hands by purchasing a basic set of clubs (in other words, dirt cheap) to beat up while I developed a consistent golf swing. The cheapies I use have performed their job and my game has improved significantly even with the 6 months or so of downtime that is force upon me by the upper Midwest.

However, during our harsh winters I sometimes get to travel to warmer golfing climates. In order to save my nerves from wear and tear at the hands of the airport baggage technicians, I usually rent golf clubs when I arrive at my destination.

As a left-handed golfer, the clubs that are available for rent are usually toss-aways from some generous benefactor of the course. Many times when I have rented golf clubs I usually felt justified in my belief that “it ain’t the club, it’s the clubber” because there was no improvement in my play, and most times there was the opposite result – I played much worse. This has been my general experience except for two occations…

On one occasion, I had the pleasure of swinging brand new Nike’s and on the other, an older set of Calloway’s. When I played with the Nike’s I chalked the up the pleasant experience to something comparable to the excitement of driving a really nice automobile. I still downplayed the idea that technology could significantly improve my play on the golf course.

However, I must admit that the old set of Calloway’s made a real impression on me. I can’t say I have ever felt more at home with any clubs I have handled, including my own trusty dusty cheapies. When the caddie strapped them to my golf cart, I looked at them and thought: “Geez, could he have picked some older sticks for me to play with? I thought this was a classy joint!”

However, I went to the course’s driving range looking forward to playing a beautiful golf course anyway. I was told that because the driving range was in the middle of the country club that the practice balls were manufactured to deaden quickly. Immediately, I felt that the balls weren’t as dead as the caddie predicted because they flew farther than expected. I still housed a negative attitude regarding the Calloway golf clubs so it never crossed my mind that they might be helping the cause, somehow.

It really wasn’t until I was on the third hole of the course and sailed my second shot over the green from 225 yards out with a 3-iron that I realized that the clubs just might be somehow… better. (A Three Iron!! Believe me: I Really Hated Using Long Irons Prior To This!!) The more I played the more I realized the clubs were, in fact, improving my game.

I began to think that instead of downplaying the golf club in the hands of the beginners who are learning how to properly and consistently swing, the better approach for us high-handicappers might be to ask the following question: “if I purchase a set of clubs (new or used) what is the lowest price point at which the golf club technology becomes noticeably better for my game as it stands now?” Then, the next logical question should be “What one thing should I look for in my next set of golf clubs that allows the clubs to maximize my abilities?”

The only difference in the clubs I could spot that was different from the clubs I currently own, besides their age, was on the face of the irons. The area on the face of the irons that usually houses the circle deemed to be the ‘sweet spot’ was not a small circle but an oval that extended over most of the face. If the sweet spot was truly that large, I can easily see why I had such a good time with those clubs.

Regardless of the answers from the gurus regarding whether club technology can help your overall golf game, I now personally believe that the technology can indeed make a noticeable difference to our enjoyment of the game and that is a nice step for me! Unfortunately I can only speculate as to what variable or combination of variables the old Calloway clubs contained that made the experience different for me. The fact that the “Truth Is Out There” keeps the game highly interesting though.

Ask the people that you play with whether you have a go with theirs and so find out whether they feel any different to play with, it is good if they have different types or brands and then you can get a feel for what differences there are between them.

Also think about what you want from a driver. Think about the grip, weight and other aspects. Which are most important to you and what do you feel would make a difference to you, perhaps a lighter one or one which makes your hands less likely to slip when playing.

Make sure that the ones that you are interested in can solve these problems for you and therefore make an improvement in your game. Go to a shop and try out some as well, see if they will let you handle them and practice swinging them. They may even have a special area where you can do this safely without other people around.

It may be worth seeing if you can hire or borrow some to find out what they are like. It could be a big investment that you are making and it I really important to make sure that the golf swing driver that you buy is the one that is best suited to you.

Tip 1: Balance is KEY — A middle infielder waits on the pitch by keeping his knees bent, facing the plate and keeping his weight balanced evenly on both feet, so that he can quickly react to the hit, and run to the left or the right.The golf swing requires the same balance.Bend your knees, face the ball, and don’t start off the shot by leaning in any direction. You’ve probably seen many “once-a-year” golfers making this mistake. They start the swing off with their weight way off balance. Doing this dooms the swing before you begin. Keeping yourself balanced is crucial, as is keeping the knees bent and being properly set.

Tip 2: WATCH the Left Arm — One trick many experienced golfers use requires only a watch and your golf club. Take a watch and put it on upside down, where the face of the watch is on the underside of your wrist instead of the top of your wrist. Now, watch that left arm while you slowly swing. If your watch is facing the ground during your backswing, than you’re opening up your clubface. Throughout your swing, make sure you can see the face of your watch. If you can, than you’re properly rotating your wrist, closing the face of the club, and dramatically lessening the chances of hitting a slice.

Tip 3: Proper Grip — Proper Grip — The grip is not something many consider when they are troubleshooting their swing. But a bad grip can ruin a swing, no matter how good it looks. A good test to make sure you have the proper grip is to insert two golf tees between your thumb and the webbing of your hand while gripping the club. If the tees point toward the target, than your weak grip is a typical slicer’s mistake. Make sure both tees are pointing straight in front of you, which will show that you are gripping it properly.

When we look at golf club design since 1990, we see the movement to a larger clubface. This has resulted in clubs that are significantly easier to hit, meaning more good golf shots, even for beginners. This is due to the creation of a larger “hitting area” or “sweet spot” on the clubface where the ball can be struck solidly for maximum distance. Beginning golfers absolutely must start their golfing careers with large head metal woods and oversize irons.

Club manufacturers have also added the element of “perimeter weighting” to the larger irons. Perimeter weighting is the term used for moving weight from the center of the club to the outer edges. This club design is known as “cavity back.” With this weight distribution, the clubhead is less likely to twist when the ball is struck outside the sweet spot. The resulting shot will travel farther and straighter than a similar shot hit with a small clubhead.

Golf clubs with large clubheads and perimeter weighting are known as “game improvement” clubs, or forgiving clubs. These are clubs that will produce the best possible shot results when the ball is not struck precisely. Beginning golfers should rely on this element of forgiveness to get the most enjoyment out of their learning experience.

Additionally, these larger clubheads should be paired with a regular flex or graphite club shaft to further increase the chances of success. These club shafts are more flexible and will enable the beginner to accelerate the clubhead through impact with the ball. The greater the clubhead speed, the greater the distance the ball will travel.

One last tip on buying golf clubs for beginners is to take a good look at used clubs. Golfers have a propensity to abandon their old clubs in a never ending attempt to buy a better golf game. During the fitting, the golfer will be able to hit several brands of clubs to find what he or she hits best. The selected club can then be fitted for length and “lie.”

The “lie” of a club is the angle between the bottom or sole of the club and the shaft. If the lie angle is too upright, the ball will typically fly left of the target. If the angle is too flat, the ball will normally fly to the right. All you need to remember is that the lie of the club makes a significant difference and you need to have it checked by the club fitter.

A putter isn’t normally included in a set of clubs. My tips on buying golf clubs for beginners would always include spending some extra time selecting a putter. Putting is a very individualistic part of the game, and the putter should look and feel right to the player. So much of putting is confidence, and you need to be very comfortable with your putter selection. A club fitting can also include the putter. Remember, about 43% of the strokes in an 18 hole round of golf are made with the putter. It may be the most important club in the bag.
